VLSI

VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) is the current level of computer microchip ministration and refers to Microchips containing in the 100s of 1000s of transistors..

Moore's law
Garden Moore, Moore's law refers to Moore's perception that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years, though the cost of computers is halved. Moore's law states that we can expect the speed and capability of our computers to increases every couple of years, and we will pay less for them.

Garden Moore..

It defines the integration level,Vlsi technology came out after the implementation of
  1.  SSI
  2. MSI
  3. LSI
  4. VLSI
  5. ULSI
SSI

Small scale integration.  1964, 1 to 10 transistors. 1 to 12 logic gates.

MSI

Medium Scale Integration. 1968, 10 to 500 transistors. 13 to 99 logic gates..

LSI

Large scale integration, 1971, 500 to 20000 transistors. 100 to 9999 logic gates..

VLSI

Very Large Scale Integration, 1980, 20000 to 1000000 transistors.. 10000 to 99999 logic gates.

ULSI

Ultra Large Scale Integration,1984, 1000000 more transistors. 1000000 and more logic gates..

Integrated circuits..(ICs)

  1. Ic can work on low voltage.
  2.  They can handle limited amount of power.
  3. They are very small in size.
  4. They are cheap.
  5. Complex circuitry on a chip may be used to obtain improved performance characteristics..

Discrete circuits

  1. Discrete circuits require competitively more voltage.
  2. Discrete circuits can handle much more power than IC.
  3. Circuit with discrete components acquire large space.
  4. Discrete circuits are costly than ICs.
  5. The performance is not good.

Design

Front end mainly deals with the designing and testing part of a digital system or unit. This includes logical designing and verification, in other words, gate level work or say RTL level designing and verification is considered. While backend  vlsi holds mainly the fabrication and development part.

Difference between verilog and vhdl

Verilog

  1. An HDL used to model electronic system.
  2.  Based on c language.
  3. Case sensitive.
  4. A newer language than VHDL.
  5. Less complex.

VHDL

  1. An HDL used in electronic design automation to describe digital and mixed. Signal systems such as field programmable gate arrays and integrated circuits.
  2. Based on Ada and Pascal language.
  3. Not case sensitive.
  4. Older than verilog.
  5. More complex.

Advantage

  1. Compactness.
  2. Mobility.
  3. Reliability.
  4. Less power consumption.
  5. Large market background.
  6. Effective use in real life..

Disadvantage:

  1. More expensive for designing basic devices.
  2. No advancement in fabrication in India..
  3. Lack of fabrication training institutes . So effects on production in India..

Companies in india:

Intel, Nividia, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Samsung,Texas instrument, AMD, ARM, Sandisk, Axiom, IBM..

Conclusion:

Learned the applications and scope of VLSI.
Learned about the application of VLSI design softwares and Programming languages. learned about CMOS technology and fabrication process. Knew that there is tremendous scope and growth for those who choose VLSI design as a career..
